The University of South Carolina (USC) is located at the heart of the city. USC has most of its classrooms and sports facilities near the downtown of the city. Columbia is the capital of the state of South Carolina with a population of 136,632 and it is also at the center of the Columbia metropolitan statistical area, which has a population of 829,470.

The Broad and the Saluda River stream through Columbia as they merge within city limits to form the Congaree River.

Columbia benefits from Southern military installations such as Fort Jackson, operated by the US Army, and McEntire Joint National Guard Base, operated by the US Air Force and used as the training base for the South Carolina Air National Guard.
